LENTEN DEVOTIONALS 2018

Day 2 - Thursday, February 15, 2018

Posted by Bob Dunbar on

Heed My Commandments and Hold onto My Promises.                            Leviticus 26:3

In the mid 1970’s, I found myself in one of those what should I do now change of employment conundrums.  There were several opportunities to consider and they were quickly pared down to two. One of my concerns was the need for a compensation package that would help meet the fast approaching need to fund the college costs of three teenagers. The priority focus was that whatever presented itself would be within God’s will for my life.

As the days flew by, the path was not becoming clear. The best options had been whittled down to two, but there, the path became fuzzy. Both situations offered exciting challenges that appealed to me and both were with teams of people that felt right. One of the companies   being considered was a large successful firm that offered a good future with a solid compensation package. The second was a much younger   company that had lesser resources but would give me an opportunity to own a part of the business. This would offer a long-held goal to be a major part of the direction of the company I would be working with.

The “wait on the Lord” part of the plan soon gave way to “it is time to make a decision.” The self-imposed decision day arrived, and as the day wore on and the sun was setting in the west, I was rush hour driving north on Interstate 35. I often use drive time to pray, so I decided to talk this over with the Lord. The abridged version of my prayer in this case was, “Lord please help me with this decision, I can go either way on this, but I want it to be in your will.” I then had an impulse to open a Bible laying on the car seat next to me and put a finger in someplace. When I glanced down my finger was resting on Leviticus 26:3. I pulled over to the edge of the freeway and stopped. I began to read. “If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, I will send you rain in its season and the ground will yield its crops and the trees of the field their fruit.” The passage goes on from there making it clear that the most  important thing we can do as we live our daily lives is, heed, obey, and expect God’s promises.

Prayer:  Lord God, keep me mindful of your decrees and the need to be obedient and the tremendous promise of your provision so we can be safe in the land.  Amen.
