Lenten Devotionals 2020

Bonus Devotional, Monday, April 6, 2020

Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave behind a blessing— grain offerings and drink offerings for the Lord your God. Joel 2:12-14

In this passage, God is declaring to his people to return to him, even if they have turned away from him. God doesn’t care for their fasting and weeping and mourning, he just wants his people to love him. And for those who do turn away from him, he forgives them, as he is slow to anger, and filled with compassion and love.

The time where I questioned my belief and faith in God was the year of 2014. That year I had experienced so much pain and suffering in my family due to deaths, that I thought God had abandoned me. I hated going to Church. I didn’t believe that God ever did anything good for me. I felt mad and ashamed that I put all my love and faith into God and he did this to me.

Fortunately, I was able to see past my grief and anger, and realize that God wasn’t trying to hurt me. In fact, he was with me, supporting me through those tough times. So, I finally went back to God, and he welcomed me back with open arms. I now try to be as involved as I can in church, as I want to continue to strengthen my relationship with God. I run the soundboard at 11 a.m. services almost every Sunday, and I help lead a 7th grade group downtown. I am also going on the mission trip to Kentucky. None of this would’ve happened if God hadn’t shown me his love in compassion.

All I can say is that if you feel like God has betrayed you, or that he’s purposely making your life miserable, just remember that God loves you, no matter what happens in your life, or what you say to him. God is just that loving.

Prayer: Dear God. Thank you for being with us, even when times are tough. Even when we turn our backs on you, we know that you will never turn your back on us, and always welcome us with open arms and compassion. Amen.
