Lenten Devotionals 2020

Bonus Devotional, Tuesday, April 7, 2020

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”  John 3:16

In 2002 my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer.  She went through treatment and “beat” it.  Then in either late 2005 or early 2006, the cancer showed itself again.  This time, it had spread, and over time it ended up in her liver, brain, and probably elsewhere.

Once the cancer returned, we prayed for my mom every night with Betsy (who was born in January 2005), asking God to please “take care of Grandma Maureen when she’s sick.”

On December 12, 2006 my mom died.  That night, at my parents’ house, we said our bedtime prayers with Betsy, but when we got to the part of taking care of Grandma Maureen, we had to change it.  And so we asked God to “take care of Grandma Maureen in heaven.”  Picking up on the change from what we had asked God for every night for the past 9 months, Betsy, at the ripe old age of 23 months, looked up, waved her little hands in the air making the motion that in sign language means all done, and said through her paci, “Gamma Mween...all done...sick.”

We were all taken aback by this little voice.  That little voice turned how we were thinking about things upside down.

Prayer: Thank you for your children that help change our hearts and minds and help us see things from a different perspective. Amen.
