Lenten Devotions

Day 22: Written by Jeff Maki

“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the law and the Prophets.” Matthew 7:12

There have been numerous instances that have had a significant impact on my faith and strong Christian commitment. One of the instances that has reinforced my faith (and stuck with me) was related to work and a man who was brave enough to bring his Christian faith to the workplace to improve relationships between management and workers. This was during my first experience in manufacturing supervision and the great responsibility you have to make sure everything you do helps make the business you support remain strong and successful so there is job security, workforce stability, productivity, and human dignity in the workplace. All of these ingredients are needed to build a successful business!

We brought the workforce in whole, maintenance, production, warehouse and management into a large session to learn and recognize the importance of dignity and respect in the workplace to find solutions to be successful. One of the big
ah-ha’s was learning and talking about the statement, “for better or worse.” After the conference, when I think about it, that individual who brought Christianity into the workplace, taught all of us that instead of being against someone or something, ask how you can be “for them” so fruitful solutions to complex problems can be worked out together. Learning about love, dignity and respect, from great men of courage, taught me that not only does it help in the workplace, it is valuable in all aspects of life.

Having Christian faith and elevating the worth of all people is the heartbeat of what God is all about. Community, work, friends and family committed to Christ through love, dignity, and respect has impact beyond all of us. Despite different views and objectives, being a Christian committed to love, dignity and respect touches all of us and sets an example to live by. The results are outstanding. I have seen tense situations turn into great solutions by treating others as you want to be treated.

Prayer: God, I thank You for giving people the courage to live their faith in all that they do. Continue to teach all of us the importance of being for each other, for better, not worse. Thank You for teaching us about dignity and respect for all, challenging us daily to treat others as we would like to be treated. Help us to walk together, pray together and live a life of faith together. Amen.
