Lenten Devotions

Day 26: Written by Shane Strack

“Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

Stress and anxiety are part of many people’s daily life.  Whether it is dealing with struggles, past or present, or concern for the future, God is there to listen.

Throughout my life, I’ve had varying degrees of worry.  The point in my life that really tested my ability to deal with stress was my freshman year of college.  It was Halloween and things were going pretty well for me.  That day I received a call that my Mom had gotten really sick and was rushed to the hospital.  This was a time where I felt helpless, being nearly four hours away without transportation.

I was eventually able to get a ride home from one of my aunts and she told me of the severity of my mother’s illness.  It was at that point I begin to pray.  As a child, prayer was a part of everyday life.  I went to a Catholic grade school until 4th grade and our family recited the rosary many nights.  I credit much of my faith and belief to my parents for helping to make church part of my life as a child.

My mother went through several months of tests and a couple surgeries as she eventually was diagnosed with pancreatitis.  Her strong faith helped her to remain positive during this challenge.  Today, she deals with health issues, but God remains an important part of her life.

I now find myself wanting to pass on my faith to our children.  Saying a prayer at bedtime is important as well as pointing out that you don’t need to be perfect when praying to God.  God is always listening and you don’t need to have the “perfect prayer.”  I used to pray when I needed help with something.  Now I find myself offering thanks for the blessings my family and I have received.

Prayer:  Thank You for the blessings in life.  May we find ways to help those in need.  Grant us the strength to overcome those things in life that might cause us stress or worry.  Please be by our side in times of need.  Amen.
