Lenten Devotions

Day 30: Written by Chuck McGill

“For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Philippians 2:13

When I read this verse, it is not hard for me to believe that God works through people.  I see it all the time.  God does some great things through some great people.  Good righteous people doing the work of God. What is sometimes hard to believe is that God works through me.  I am a woefully imperfect sinner.  How could God do anything through me?

I had the opportunity to play bass for several years in an Elvis tribute band.  I loved the music and thought it was a great show, but I was often embarrassed to tell people I was in an Elvis band.  To many, Elvis symbolizes tackiness, self-indulgence, and vice.  During his popularity, preachers across the country railed against his vulgarity.  Doing his music in tribute to him does not exactly seem like God’s work.

However, I soon came to see that might not be the case. I learned how important gospel music and the gospel message were to Elvis.  He released 11 gospel records over his career, comprised of some 60 gospel songs.  He never won a Grammy in any popular music category, but he won three Grammy awards for gospel music.  At one concert, some young women held up a banner that said, “Elvis, You’re the King” to which Elvis replied, “No, Jesus Christ is King. "The Elvis in our band was an ordained pastor who delivered a Christian message and testimonial as part of each show.  We did several gospel songs, and ended with a medley including “How Great Thou Art.”  At every show people seemed moved and touched by the gospel message.

I believe that God was working through the music of Elvis, and through this bunch of musicians who were playing it.  If God can work through Elvis, and through me, then I believe he can work through anybody.  I believe that God can and does work through you, if you let him.

Prayer: Dear God, please grant us the knowledge and confidence that You can and will work to do good through us.  Help us to be open to Your presence and guidance so that You can use us for Your will.  In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
