Lenten Devotions

Day 9: Written by Lily Jorgenson

Posted on

“He will not let your foot slip- He who watches over you will not slumber; Indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”  Psalm 121; 3-4

Growing up in a Christian family helped me to find my faith, however I felt that there was always a piece missing. Even though I went to the Wednesday religion classes and learned all these new things about God, like “It is OK to be mad at God.” and “It's OK to be friends with non-Christians.”, I still struggled with doubts and questions.

Even though I knew that there was a God and I always believed in Him, there was a part of me that would still question, “Is there actually a God out there and how do we know that He is watching us and listening to our every prayer?” I have asked my mom this and she said “ We don’t have physical proof.  We do have the Bible and our internal compass, however, and eventually every Christian has to ask themselves to make the leap to believe. That is what faith is, believing without seeing and learning to trust.”

With this question still pondering in my mind I spent a week at Camp Wapo where we learned even more about God.  Camp taught us how to be closer to Him. After every game was played and the prayers were said, the entire camp went to the to the campfire. We sang songs, told stories and after all was done, we would say a prayer for our loved ones and for the ones that just need someone by them in there hard times. We did so every night for a week.

As the week came to an end, my question still had not been answered. During the last campfire I was thinking about my question, “Is God real or not?” and I glanced up in the sky and saw two clouds that looked like eyes. When I saw the two clouds, I just sat there staring at them trying to make something of this. After about five minutes I finally realized that instead of a human verbally telling me if God was real or not, it was God giving me a sign that he is there watching and listening to us. By seeing those eyes in the clouds, I realized that God might not be a living, physical being but a Spirit that we should believe and trust in.

Prayer:    Dear God, thank You for showing Yourself to me when I needed You most during my time of doubt. Amen.
