LENTEN DEVOTIONALS 2018

Day 3 - February 16,2018

Posted by Carole DeJardin on

As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem they came to a village where a woman named Martha welcomed them into her home. Her sister Mary sat on the floor, listening to Jesus as he talked. But Martha was the jittery type and was worrying over the big dinner she was preparing.                                         Luke 10:38-40

My family and I love to entertain, invite others for dinner, host family gatherings and even host the neighborhood events. I am a stickler for details. The spoon and fork always need to be in the correct spot on the table, there will be flowers on the table and my apron will always match the event. I can relate to Martha in every way.

I realized many years ago that we were missing the reason why we were hosting. Like Martha,  I would be running into the kitchen to fix something or bringing out something more to eat or drink.  I have learned I am Martha by nature, desiring to serve. But I am Mary by choice, making time to listen and enjoying those  we are with.  I can do the work without thinking, but I need to be reminded to stop and listen to those around me.

Remembering to be the Mary and listen to God is not always easy. Learning to balance Mary and Martha means to serve others not only at the table, but with your heart as well.

As Jesus said to Martha, “Martha, dear Martha, you’re fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it—it’s the main course, and won’t be taken from her."

Prayer: God, Help us to balance the Mary and the Martha within us, doing what needs to be done and spending time in your presence. Amen
