LENTEN DEVOTIONALS 2018

Day 37 - Thursday, March 22

Posted by Patti Thacker on

But what happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard, things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. Since this is the kind of life we have chosen, the life of the Spirit, let us make sure that we do not just hold it as an idea in our heads or a sentiment in our hearts, but work out its implications in every detail of our lives.

Galatians 5: 22, 25   The Message Bible

I grew up in a Christian home, church on Sunday, prayers before bed, Sunday School, confirmation. Love for God was a part of my life and soul. But it wasn’t until I experienced a major heartbreak as an adult that I began to really deepen my relationship with God. My marriage of 22 years was in serious trouble and I wasn’t sure how I could fix it.

My sister-in-law introduced me to a meditative practice called Centering Prayer, a method of silent prayer that is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. It seems that what I needed was to slow down and really listen to God’s voice.

Centering Prayer has helped me experience God’s presence within and to cultivate the fruits of the Spirit in my daily life. Spending 20-30 minutes every day with God, in silence, has guided me to approach my life differently than I had been. My relationships with others improved.

I am grateful to God for putting people in my life who teach me new ways to grow in my faith.

Prayer: Dear God, help me to spread your love everywhere I go. Be present in my whole being so fully that all my life will reflect your compassion. Shine through me so that every person I meet will feel your presence in my spirit. Amen
