“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”  Matthew 4:19

This verse takes me back to when I was a young kid. My Dad loved to fish and explore the outdoors, spending most of his free time teaching and sharing his passion with myself and my three brothers. As I reflect back on this I can’t even imagine the amount of patience an understanding it took to stay with it, but I can tell you now just how glad I am that he did!

There is an old saying, “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day — if you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.”

As I continue to grow in my faith and understanding I realize that this verse and saying can be applied to so many of life’s experiences.  Whether its leading a team of people at work, coaching youth sports teams or raising kids, I often find the easiest thing to do might be to just do it myself, but then I am reminded of my faith and father’s examples that I need to teach and mentor others so they may feed for a lifetime.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, during this Lenten season may you continue to bless us with your presence and give us the patience, courage and strength to share our unique talents with others.
