Lenten Devotions

Day 3: Written by Megan Simmons

Posted on

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Remember the Lord in everything you do and he will show you the right way.” Proverbs 3:5-6

Anyone who knows me will agree with me when I say that I can be stubborn. I have a hard time with change. In most situations I have a plan, some type of layout that the day should follow and it can be hard for me to adjust my thinking when my plan shifts. When I woke up to my mom's light on around five in the morning I knew something was wrong. Minutes later I found out about the biggest change yet, my dad had committed suicide. From then on I watched my normal routine life shift and conform into a life I didn't quite recognize.

When I was in confirmation, in 8th grade, I was in a group with my best friend and some other girls I really did not know. My leader was a saint. She dealt with me showing up every week angry at God. I truly just sat in my chair fuming for the first year of confirmation.

It wasn't until my second year of confirmation, that I realized that God has this plan for every person, that ends with happily ever after. It's up to us to listen to God and what he wants us to achieve to get to that happily ever after. While God’s original plan for my dad may not have been dying young, my dad's plan morphed into having kids who could go on and do more, all while enjoying life in a way my dad could not.

I am not good at change. I dig my heels in and try to keep everything the same for as long as possible. But God eventually helps you loosen your grip on the old and holds your hand while you transfer to the new.

Prayer: Lord, trusting in you always, even through big changes is a difficult task we cannot always accomplish. But yet you wait for us Lord, ready to love us and we thank you for that. In your name we pray. Amen.
