Lenten Devotions

“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.  And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have the power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.  Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever. Amen! Ephesians 3:16-21

This passage reminds me of the awesome vastness of God – the breadth and depth of His power, wisdom and love, that we cannot even comprehend it – it “surpasses knowledge”.  I am reminded of this when I think of Jesus’ life and death – it is difficult to truly comprehend with my finite mind, what happened and how it happened.  I must rely on faith.

I am reminded of God’s power and wisdom in my daily work as I learn about and work with information that scientists discover about our natural world – the more we learn, the more we realize we do not yet understand.  It is mind-boggling to see how animals, plants, weather, and climate are inter-related and changing one seemingly small factor can set off a whole series of other changes in the ecosystem.  The same sense of awe fills me when I consider the privilege of being pregnant, giving birth, and watching our son grow.  The individual ways that different organs in our bodies work, much less the ways that all of our organs work together to grow and heal, points to life being nothing short of a miracle.  God’s design for his creation is awe-inspiring at every level and truly beyond our comprehension – despite our best efforts to understand it!

From another perspective, I look at back at the twists and turns my life has taken to get me to where I am today...I am so blessed with my husband, Tim, and son, Johnathan.  I could not have imagined it or planned it, but I can see how God worked in amazing ways and especially at times in life when I struggled.  There were lessons I needed to learn to prepare me for the next steps in life and so that I might be of help to others along the way too.  God is all-knowing and the ways that He often works are beyond our ability to see or understand.

To me, these are just a few of the things I have experienced, or come to realize, that point to the mystery that God is indeed “able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” and that His love is wider, longer, higher and deeper than we can comprehend.  If we pay attention, we can see that He has thought of every detail and is constantly caring for us.  To me, this is very comforting.

Prayer:  Thank you for guiding our lives every day in ways that we do not even realize and for loving us beyond our understanding.  We are sorry for times when we take your love, wisdom, and power for granted.  Please help us to know You better and to forgive others. Please forgive us for all of our sins.  In your name, Jesus Christ. Amen.
