LENTEN DEVOTIONAL, DAY 11, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2021

Posted on

“The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The guidance of our Lord Jesus be with you.” Romans 16:20

When I was little, time seemed to move so slow. Waiting for your birthday, a vacation or school to be out for summer seemed like an eternity. The older I get; the faster time feels to carry onward. In reality though, time hasn’t gotten faster, we have just crammed our lives with so many things that we rarely have time to stop and think.

Fast forward to March of 2020 when the world came to a screeching halt due to Covid-19. We were forced to slow down as school, activities, work and all other events were cancelled.  Unsure of what was going on and how long we would be “in lockdown” brought on a lot of fear, stress and anxiety for people. My husband was home from work, my 4-year-old was home from preschool and my 2-year-old had all of her activities cancelled. Panicked, I made a (crazy) schedule for every hour of the day, as we could not see anyone or do anything outside our home per the guidelines.

After a few days of that schedule, I was exhausted, my kids were cranky, and my husband was probably wishing he could go back to work! We needed some re-evaluation on how we were going to spend this time. I needed to shift my focus from what I thought I needed to maintain my sanity, to what do my kids need from me during this time when their whole lives changed without being able to fully understand why. I needed to look at this as an opportunity to have more time with our family that was uninterrupted. Now we could slow down and just enjoy the simple things in life. We started doing projects outside and around the house. Spending more time outdoors and just letting the kids explore and be kids was one of the best choices we made during this time. Some days we were messy, some days we stayed in our pajamas, and some days we did nothing at all, but it was all time we had together that was uninterrupted by emails, phone calls, meetings or activities and we cherished it!

We were not perfect during this time, but the kids learned to do things that we never had time to do before. Things when we were kids that just happened naturally, but in today’s day in age don’t because we think busyness equates to value and success. But really, there is nothing more important than spending time as a family. The kids are growing up fast and I need to stop and slow down and enjoy every stage of life with them. We need to be intentional with our time instead of over planning.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that all Your children can see the value in our time You have so  graciously given us.  To be present in our lives and enjoy all the wonderful stages that life brings. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
