LENTEN DEVOTIONAL, DAY 12, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2021

Posted by Don Hale on

“As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man.”  Proverbs 27:19

Thirty years ago, I was working in Spain for an international corporation and was asked by my American boss with Iranian roots to host a couple from Iran for a few days. I was somewhat incredulous as all my images of “those people” were the angry faces I saw on TV during the American hostage crisis. The couple were not allowed to go to the United States, of course. However, they could travel to Spain and so our meeting was possible. I remained incredulous but said yes to hosting.

Peggy and I spent a couple days with the couple, Bahram & Minoo, and shared meals and conversation. They had hopes and dreams for their children like the hopes and dreams we had for our children. (They were not allowed to bring their children with them as an insurance policy they would return home.) They came to our house and on our second day we went out for some American style pizza at their request and steadily became true friends. We got to see their hearts and they were good.

Now, Peggy and I are caring for our great granddaughter, Emmylou, for a few months in order to help with daycare during these difficult times – not hard duty. We traveled to Montana, rented a condo and are enjoying Emmylou.

I see the wonder in Emmylou’s eyes as she is observing the world around her, and all the people in her world for the first time. The face of the world seems a little chaotic but the people in her world can surround her with the hearts of love and acceptance. I know this will happen and Emmylou with have a good heart that reflects the woman she will be.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me look for the goodness in people. Make my heart a place that loves like You.
