LENTEN DEVOTIONAL, DAY 22, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10, 2021

“. . . these signs will accompany those who believe.”    Mark 16:17

How do miracles happen? Miracles are all around us. Miracles are made from things not visible. God uses his compassion and power to heal our weaknesses and restore our faith. For my entire life I have witnessed miracles.  Sometimes it has taken years for me to recognize a miracle and how God created it. Sometimes the miracle is immediately obvious, stunning, breathtaking.

How did it happen that on a blustery wintery night on a highway in southern Minnesota when I drove to join my husband`s family in Iowa after the death of my father-in-law that suddenly my car stopped running? My children, 17 and 13 years old, alarmed in the darkness, murmured as I guided the car into the deep snow on the side of the vacant rural two lane highway. Then through the blowing snow a light appeared about a quarter mile away. It was a farm place. We floundered through the wind and snow toward the farmer`s steel shed lights. There in the warm shed, we were warmly welcomed. The farmer and his sons happened to run an auto repair shop in their shed. They hustled their tow truck out to pull my car off the road and into their shed. Parts would need to be ordered to fix the car. The farmers would fix the car.  I called my husband to come get us. The weather improved. Many hours later we safely arrived at our destination.  How did all this this happen? A miracle, I think.

How did it happen when I worked in the Neonatal ICU that a premature baby named Rosie was born? At 14 ounces, she fit in the palm of my hand. Rosie needed no respiratory support other than a little oxygen and time for her body grow enough to be strong enough to maintain an appropriate body temperature. Rosie went home after six weeks in the NICU.  Five years later she returned to thank the staff for caring for her. Think about all the ways God put this miracle together!

How does it happen that our garden always produces very robust sunflowers? We do not plan them. The squirrels do. These glorious flowers are adored by the neighbors, provide nectar for the butterflies, seeds for the birds and food for droves of other creatures. Multiple miracles!

Prayer: Lord, thank You for the blessings and miracles You have showered upon me. I am grateful. My faith is confirmed.
