LENTEN DEVOTIONAL, DAY 37, THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 2021

Posted by Anne Peterson on

“A loyal friend is like a safe shelter; find one, and you have found a treasure. Nothing else is as valuable; there is no way of putting a price on it.”

Sirach 6:14-15

As I was praying and searching for direction with my devotional, I came across this verse noted in my bible from a Teens Encounter Christ weekend when I was younger. My feelings haven’t changed much in all these years; God is my friend and I still believe true friendships are a treasure and a blessing.

My life definitely has experienced and weathered some of the most joyous of occasions, the most trying of times, and a whole lot of somewhere in between the two. I believe that God brings people into our lives at different times for different reasons. Their relationships are  woven through us long before we know or have a glimpse of understanding their importance and place in our lives. As I get older, I am able to see the beautiful tapestry of friendships woven throughout my life.

Writing this devotional has given me an opportunity to think back and reflect on the friendships in my life as well as what kind of friend I am and aspire to be. As my roles over the years have changed from daughter and sister to wife and mother, I realized so too has the   importance of these relationships. Their purpose, genuineness and influence have far greater reach and impact. Even in the simplest of moments that someone shares a story, faith, common interest, laughter, condolences, companionship, motherly advice, everyday activities or even a much needed hug, these friends make life better bringing joy and love to my heart. In times of sadness, grief, intense hurt and pain, friends have been there to console, grieve together, offer comfort and support. I have had dear friends step in with grace and love, pick me up, wipe my tears, listen with an open heart and give me a safe place to be real, honest and vulnerable. They respect, don’t judge or repeat my thoughts, are truthful and honest with me. These friends are family to me and their sisterhood is something that I cherish dearly as well as the blessing that they are in my life. I am grateful to be here today because of God’s love, faith, family and dear friends.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for your unconditional love and friendship. Thank You too for the treasured people in my life and those who have been there for me. From my darkest struggles to joyous celebrations and everyday moments in between, I am grateful. I look for Your direction and guidance so that I may continue to be a trusted and loyal friend too. I pray that everyone has friendships that bring joy and blessings to their lives. Help us stay close and be there for each other during this pandemic and these times of need. Amen.
