LENTEN DEVOTIONAL, DAY 38, FRIDAY, April 8, 2022

Posted by Emilee Wagner on

“See, I am doing a new thing!  Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?  I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

Isaiah 43:19

Have you ever heard the expression it’s easier to live in the past than in the present? Sometimes we spend so much time living in the past or even thinking about the future that we forget what’s happening right now. Why do we try to live in the past or dream of the future instead of living in the present? Living in the present can be hard because things happen that we can’t control. When we look back to the past or think of what might be in the future, we have control over how it makes us feel.

With COVID still a large part of our lives, the present can feel dark, uncertain and hopeless, but Isaiah tells us in Chapter 43, verse 19 that wonderful things are happening in the present. Can’t you see it? Even during our lowest moments when it feels like there’s no way out, God is working. He sees us and he hears our prayers.

The lesson I have learned this year is to look for the good in everything. My daughter has been struggling with mental health issues and watching your child go through something like this is heartbreaking. Our days have been full of stress, sadness, anger, and survival, but each day as she gets better and we learn more about how we can be there for her, there is a beautiful new thing “springing up” in our lives. If I didn’t stop and appreciate each moment of progress and each smile, I would be missing out on the present and all of the wonderful things happening and making their way like streams in what can feel like a wasteland.

So how can you find light in the present? Prayer, exercise, journaling, spending time with friends, finding a new hobby, reading a great book, watching a funny movie, and more. Find what works for you. Enjoy the journey because God is working in your life right now!

Prayer: Dear Jesus, as we go about our daily tasks, please help us to be present and find the joy in everything we do. Help us to learn from the past by making new memories in the  present that help us create a bright future. Lord, you created us in Your image to be resilient, brave, and strong. Through our faith in You, we are able to find light in the darkest of days. Amen.
