LENTEN DEVOTIONAL, DAY 39, SATURDAY, April 9, 2022

Posted by Pastor John Lestock on

“Remember that those who are teachers will be judged by a much higher standard.”

James 3:1

I am both humbled and challenged by this verse. It is a firm reminder that those of us who are in positions of leadership are accountable, both to God and the people we serve.

This is true for school teachers, public servants, elected officials, pastors… and really anyone and everyone who is entrusted with responsibilities of leading others, and is expected to understand the importance of that position. Leadership calls for dedication, commitment, integrity, selflessness, caring, and setting a good example for others. These qualities are not negotiable, but essential for leaders.

Anyone who has been in a position of leadership knows, there will be temptations to misuse and abuse that position! It doesn’t take much for leaders to be deceived into believing they are beyond reproach because of their position! Many gifted and capable teachers, elected officials, and pastors (etc.) have been guilty of carelessness, excesses, and even corruption. So here in the book of James, we are warned about taking positions of responsibility, if we are willing to live by higher standards. Leadership is a wonderful privilege, but also an awesome responsibility!

And so, I am humbled by the trust placed in those who teach or lead. I am humbled by the  authority given to us in good faith. And I am challenged to live as an example for others, confronting temptations when they arise, and refusing to give in to their enticing calls.

God continues to impress upon us, through the scriptures, that true leadership is not focusing on the leader, but focused on the leaner. It’s a call to service not selfishness. It is about giving, not taking. And it has to do with growth not ego. I thank God for those who have been trustworthy, true, and exemplary leaders for each of us. And I pray you and I can faithfully fulfill our callings to all we serve.

Prayer: Gracious God, give us the will and the power to do what is right. Give us the hearts of servants, minds full of goodness, and lives that are true. Amen
