Lenten Devotions Day 14

Posted by Alyssa Carlson, Student on

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17

This short and simple saying has been explaining to us for ages that nobody is alone in this world. It also tries to show us that when we try to better ourselves there is a mutual benefit, making others better through companionship, leadership, and mentorship.

I think a lot of people think they need to solve their problems on their own. Have you ever heard someone say to you, “Don’t help me, these are my problems, so I have to fix them.” But you can’t always solve problems by yourself. Sometimes your problems are so overwhelming and big you can't overcome them by yourself. I know when I ask for help, I feel weak and embarrassed, but truly when you go for help it shows people, they mean something to you. It shows that person you asked for help that they need you and cherish you, and that you trust that person with your problems. So, this is a lot like the verse, “One person sharpens another”. The person seeking help shows others they need them, and it shows the person helping that they are wanted and needed by others.

Lots of times, when I’m having an issue, I go to someone for help, and I end up giving them advice, too. We are all struggling with something and almost always you have a way to help through experiences. Even though two people might be struggling they still care for each other and try to help one another. I love how we all struggle but find a way to help one another. So again, we are all iron, so we all sharpen each other; we are all people struggling but find a way to help each other.

And what's even cooler, is God sharpens us. He is our source. He sharpens all. He sharpens me every day trying to make me a better person. And by Him trying to sharpen me, I end up sharpening others too. When God makes me a better person, I shed a little and make other people better people, too. It's like a chain. Iron sharpens iron and it continually sharpens more iron. God will always be there to sharpen me or help me; He may just put a certain person in my life to sharpen me.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for sharpening me every day, trying to make me a better person. Thank You for placing people in my life who help me and sharpen me. I am so  grateful for them because they help me get through the day and make me better. And please help me learn how to better sharpen and help other people around me. In Your name. Amen.
