Lenten Devotions Day 19

Posted by Trina Hilke on

“Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light.” Micah 7:8

I think everyone has that one quote, verse or devotion that stays with them, that becomes a sort of motto for their life. For example, addicts recite the Serenity Prayer. It reminds them to take it one day at a time and keep moving forward. This one, from the Book of Micah, is mine. It reminds me that no matter how bad things are, God will guide us through it.

Doing a simple Google search for ‘most popular Bible verses’, I was surprised by the results. Most all of them had a common theme: trust and peace. It seems as if everyone needs a little boost of faith when they are feeling down. I know that I do! In some of the darkest days, when I am overwhelmed and struggling to find my way, I remember this verse and think, “It will all work out.”

Having faith can be tough. I remember when my youngest was just three-months-old, my husband was suffering through severe depression and tried to harm himself. He was also abusing prescription drugs and alcohol, which were not helping his depression. I was devastated to think our little family wasn’t enough to make him want to live, even with a brand-new baby in our lives. It was an ache that I couldn’t move past. It was at that time in my life, some of my darkest days, this verse came to me. It was so fitting for my life (and from the book of Micah no less, my baby’s name!) Even though the life I had imagined we would have was broken down, and my world was filled with darkness, it was all going to be ok! God was going to be there to guide us through this point in our lives.

We have worked hard to help my husband find peace. He will always struggle with his demons, but he knows he can have trust in things working out. We, as people of God, need to have hope. We look to passages that tell us it will be ok, if we just place our trust in God. I know that I would have not made it through my darkest days without my faith, without God as my light!

Prayer: There are times in your life where darkness overcomes you. It is in these times that we need to look to the Lord and know that he will be there, guiding us with His light. It will work out, because He is there with you! Trust in the Lord and you will find peace. Amen.
