Lenten Devotions Day 20

Posted by Missy Austreng on

“Jesus turned and saw her. ‘Take heart, daughter’ He said, ‘your faith has healed you.’ And the woman was healed at that moment.” Matthew 9:22

Imagine being in this moment and hearing Jesus say these words to you as you're suffering through a lengthy ailment. What a comforting and secure feeling. And then to know that all it takes is your faith – your belief – to heal you!

But what about now… long after Jesus’ physical form has left this earth? We don’t see Him or hear Him as described in this story. Can faith – or believing – still heal us?

I say yes.

Just over 15 years ago, I began chemotherapy treatments to rid my body of breast cancer. I was worried and uneasy about what the future held. I lost all my hair. I was grasping for hope and trying to have a normal Christmas which included holiday shopping at Maplewood Dayton’s (now Macy’s).

The exact spot, the exact words are still fresh in my mind to this day. “Excuse me, miss, I don’t mean to bother you, but God just asked me to talk to you and tell you you’re going to be just fine.” I froze in my place and watched the tall gentleman wearing a long coat, a black cowboy hat, and full smile ride down the escalator. I wondered was that Jesus? Was he sent by God to remind me to have faith, to pray, to believe and I would be healed?

It’s in this moment, I felt what this daughter must have felt – whole, worthy, loved, seen. It’s in this moment I felt Jesus is still speaking – healing – through his believers. And for that, I’m grateful!

Prayer: Jesus, You see us, and You heal us. Thank You for being our almighty and powerful protector. Help us to have faith to open our eyes and our ears as You use Your servants to help us see and hear Your message. In Your name, Amen.
