Lenten Devotions Day 34

Posted by Kasey Baumer, Student on

“Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:15-16

Jesus saw people as they truly are; perfect expressions of light. And He wanted everyone to share and spread their light to everyone around them. If His disciples had not heard this message, no one would have believed in their own light. But the disciples could easily understand the absurdity of lighting a lamp, then covering it so it could not be seen. The light would have been wasted. Jesus has created each and every one of us to be the light, to let it shine everywhere and to everyone. By letting our light shine, we can encourage others to uncover their own inner light.

I was new to the church roughly two years ago when someone close to me encouraged me to come to Wednesday night Youth Group. During this time, I was closed off and was at the darkest time in my life. This friend was my light. They brought me to where I could uncover my light and share it with others around me. Wednesdays have now become my favorite day of the week because I am with people I love and trust and in a space where everyone can uncover their light, and get to know God. God is perfect, therefore, everyone He created is perfect, and each person is meant to shine their light, bright enough to light the whole house up. Surround yourself with those who will block the wind from your flame, keeping it from going out. Be the one who brings others towards God, leading them to let their light shine.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for teaching us to not hide our light, to be set on top of a table to give light to those around us. Thank You for sending people into our lives that will shelter our flame so it doesn’t go out. Lord, please continue to guide us through the hard times and let us guide others towards You. Amen.
