LENTEN DEVOTIONS 2019

DAY 1 - MARCH 6

Posted by Diane Wolf on

This is the greatest and most difficult commandment to keep, partly due to daily distractions and chaos that keep us from thinking about God. What does it look like to be able to fulfill God’s directive in this commandment, to love Him above all else?

A couple of years ago we remodeled our home. One of the many activities involved moving boxes and clutter in our basement, so that we could extend wires etc. to the new room. This seemed overwhelming as over the years our basement had become a catch all for way too much stuff! During that same time, I met a woman who helps people prepare their homes for open houses etc. Her operative word is declutter. I contacted her and she agreed to help us. For seven months, 4-6 hours a week, she and I worked side by side moving through each room, sorting, throwing, organizing and getting to know each other as we chatted our way through the clutter.

The real opportunity here, was that not only was I getting help organizing our home, she also engaged me to think about prioritizing God in my life. As we grew closer over time, I could see that God was her first priority in her life. It became obvious in how she lives her daily life, finding time for prayer, arranging her work so that she can always attend church on Sunday, participating in a prayer group on Friday evenings and seeking God for help with the next steps in her life. She demonstrates her love for God by her kind and caring interactions with her clients and friends. During one of our chats, she shared with me that she planned to fast and give up sugar for a period of time, for the “Glory of God”. This sacrifice could result in her being healthier but first and foremost she was offering her sacrifice to glorify God.

Her friendship and strong faith has prompted me to think- What will I do this Lent- for the “Glory of God”?

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the daily reminders you provide through people and the Gospels, to help us focus on this great commandment. Please bless us with discipline and grace to help us honor you by loving you with all of our mind, heart, strength and soul. Amen.
