LENTEN DEVOTIONS 2019

Lenten Devotion Day 2 - Thursday, March 7, 2019

Posted by Adam Wilt on

“So don’t worry about tomorrow.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.  Tomorrow will have its own worries.”    - Matthew 6:34

Two percent.  When I say “2%” most people think of the odds that the Minnesota Vikings will ever win a Super Bowl.  But for our family, 2% has a different meaning.  Those were the odds that doctors gave my wife and I of ever having a baby.  We heard that news and spent a few weeks feeling sorry for ourselves and mourning the children we would never have.

Then a new opportunity at work came up – an opportunity to move across the world and have a new adventure.  We decided to take the opportunity and just live – to live carefree and jump on a plane anytime with no worries.  Travel, adventure, new sites, and new friends were all in our future.

Four days after we accepted the assignment, we found out that my wife was pregnant…and had already been pregnant when the doctor gave us those slim odds.  We were overjoyed and amazed about defying the odds, but we also regretted the wasted time we had spent feeling sorry for ourselves and worrying about any “troubles” we thought we had.

Our daughter was born 7 months later, healthy and happy.  We thanked God once again.  We even considered naming her “Two.” Our friend George wanted us to name her “Seven,” but that’s another story.  We eventually chose “Sadie Faith” to honor the belief we had to have in God.  She has brought joy into our lives every day since.

Through this experience, we learned that we can only control so much.  So much more is in God’s hands and in His plan for us.  We still worry and we still catch ourselves wasting time thinking about what could go wrong or what may happen next, but we try our best to have faith and to live in the present

Four years later, Sadie was joined by her younger brother Parker, and we are all grateful every day for everything we have been given.  We always remember that the odds of the Vikings winning the big game are still 2%, but the odds of God having a plan for us are 100% and that we should trust that everything will work out.

Prayer:  Dear God, thank You for blessing us with SO much.  Thank You for helping us focus on what is truly important and please help us remember to not worry about any troubles we have, real or perceived.  We know that You have a plan for us, that we can only control so much, and that we should do our best to enjoy every moment of this wonderful life. Amen.
