LENTEN DEVOTIONS 2019

Lenten Devotion day 23 - Thursday, March 28, 2019

“In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.

Matthew 7:12

Most people know this verse as the Golden Rule.  After making an observation of people in my life, I have decided that we do not live by it. Growing up I was always taught to respect my elders, teachers, fellow students, and others in general.  Today, due to social media rants, probably fueled by news media that does not report the truth, I feel we have forgotten to look at others as Jesus wants us to. There are many verses in the Bible that reference this:

I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

John 13:34-35

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Romans 12:10

Treating everyone with respect, loving and honoring them as a child of God, which means not treating one person above another according to their status, sex, political preference, or color of their skin.  This is biblical...seeing each other as Jesus sees us.

Then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.  Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.

Philippians 2:2-3

This is not an easy task.

My late brother's wife and I locked horns in anger many times.  She was always telling me to do this, do that.  I found her to be judgmental and opinionated. I asked God to help our relationship...and that He did.  She and I became good friends.  Not always agreeing, but agreeing to disagree.  She has been gone now for several years, and I miss her.  I miss her love of my children, her hardworking nature, and her sense of humor.  I learned to love her.  I learned to see her through the eyes of Jesus.  We all have people like this in our lives.  It is a daily quest...but one worthy of pursuing.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the blessing of others to share our lives.  Help us to be more respectful of each other, love one another,  and see others through the eyes of Jesus.  Amen.
