LENTEN DEVOTIONS 2019

Lenten Devotion day 29 - Wednesday, April 3, 2019

“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made” Psalm 139:14

I had an acquaintance in high school who took his own life. I was recently thinking of him, so went back to read the comments on his online obituary. I was touched because people are still writing messages to him and his family to this day, over 15 years later. I noticed a common theme in people’s comments was how he was incredibly wise beyond his years, and how he always knew how to comfort peers who were struggling with insecurities, popularity, etc. His favorite quote being one of Gandhi’s; ‘We are all one in God, as a little drop of water is to the ocean’.

This quote reminds me that although sometimes we may feel insignificant, confused about our purpose or who we are, we should turn our eyes to what is important and concrete-that we are all one in the Lord, and are made in His image.

Also, although we are each one person on a planet with billions of other people, we can have a significant impact on the world, through our actions and God’s love. There is an excerpt from the book ‘The Seventh Gate’ by Margaret Weis that sums this up perfectly: “You do not have to be a king or monarch to have a significant impact on the world around you.  In the vastness of the ocean, is any drop of water greater than another?  No, you answer, and neither has a single drop the ability to cause a tidal wave. But, if a single drop falls into the ocean, it creates ripples. And these ripples spread. And perhaps these ripples grow and swell and eventually break foaming upon the shore. Like a drop in the vast ocean, each of us causes ripples as we move through our lives. The effects of whatever we do - insignificant as it may seem - spread out beyond us. We may never know what far-reaching impact even the simplest action might have on others. Thus we need to be conscious, all of the time, of our place in the ocean, of our place in the world, of our place among our fellow creatures. For if enough of us join forces, we can swell the tide of events - for good or for evil.”

Prayer: Lord, hold me in the palm of your hand, and remind me that no matter how small I feel, I am still loved by you. Help me realize the power and strength of my actions, and that I can make a difference in this world.  Guide me today, and always, and help me be an example of your light. Amen.
