LENTEN DEVOTIONS 2019

Lenten Devotion day 33 - Sunday, April 7, 2019

Posted by Peggy Hale on

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6

I have never been one to make New Year’s resolutions or to take much stock in them because I know that the diet/exercise vow falls by the wayside too easily. But this year I actually admitted to family and friends that my resolution was to quit worrying so much. Fall of 2018 had been difficult:  In October, we unexpectedly lost a 57-year-old nephew; in November, my sister’s Alzheimer’s Disease had advanced, and she was admitted to a memory care facility, and in December, my husband’s brother who had dealt with COPD for years passed away. On my mind, also, was a granddaughter who was traveling outside the country by herself.

God heard from me more often than usual.

In mid-December I made a trip West to visit my sister. It had only been six months since I had last seen her, but she had changed dramatically – even her looks had changed. I was saddened by her condition and the fact that she had to leave her home, but came to realize that she was in a safe place where loving people were attending to her needs.

Early into the New Year, a yoga instructor, who often shares positive thoughts, offered “worrying doesn’t stop bad things from happening; it only robs you of seeing the good around you.”

My life is filled with so much goodness. I am choosing to see it.

The traveling granddaughter was with our family at Christmas and now is again out of the country, but this time, with companions. I am entrusting her to God, because I can’t worry her safe.

I am making a conscious effort to concentrate on the day at hand and not worry about what should or could happen in the future. And I am carrying with me the promise that “the peace of God that passes all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus.”

Prayer: Dear Lord, when my life is caught up with worry, please calm me and help me to put my trust in you. Let me rest in your peace. Amen.
