LENTEN DEVOTIONAL, DAY 18, SATURDAY, MARCH 6, 2021

Posted by Jennifer Kapaun on

“But who indeed are you, a human being, to argue with God?  Will what is molded say to the one who molds it, “Why have you made me like this?”  Romans 9:20

Of all the things I have fought with God about, my dyslexia has never been one of them. I was lucky, my mom, who was a teacher figured it out when I was in the 2nd grade. I had parents who didn’t judge me on my grades but how hard I worked to get the grades. In Kindergarten God connected me with my best friend, who is also dyslexic, but neither of us knew that yet. God surrounded me with people who didn’t ridicule me about my slow reading, reading comprehension or bad spelling while trying to navigate a world not designed for the dyslexic mind. Of course, I didn’t recognize this until I was much older. I believe most things God does for us we never even know or do not figure out until much later.

I took a lot of calculus in college and loved it, it made sense to me. But struggled through any class that required research papers or deciphering literature. The bible might be a great piece of literature but is not dyslexic friendly. It took me into my 40’s to find a bible that worked for me, it may not look like yours, but it has leveled the playing field in understanding God’s word, I think God approves.

If God made us all identical robots without freewill the world would look very different. The unique way dyslexic’s see the world and solve problems has made the world a better place. Our strengths in thinking outside the box has created incredible inventions (Albert Einstein and Steve Jobs). Being leaders who guide the US through difficult times (Lyndon B. Johnson, John F. Kennedy and George W. Bush). How would we have survived 2020 without complex logistics    being in place (Paul Orfalea, founder of FedEx). The creative and artistic worlds that entertain and inspire us (Steven Spielberg, Pablo Picasso, Leonardo da Vinci, Ludwig von Beethoven, Walt Disney and many more).

Prayer:  Dear God, I know we all complain to You about things in our lives. Help us to see the special gifts You have given each of us.  Help us find ways to use these gifts to lift other people up and see You.  Amen.
