Can we learn more about the other candidates in the process?

Unfortunately, no. This is a human resource process, so we need to honor the confidentiality provided to all candidates.

Were there really 50+ original candidates?

The Call Committee established a list of 50 nominees through research and networking. The synod contacted each person, but not all were viable candidates for various reasons including, but not limited to, family situations, community commitments, new to their Call, not open to a Call, expensive housing market, too close to retirement.

Why not co-pastors?

As an outcome of the original work of the transition committee and council, the Call Committee was tasked to find a Lead Pastor; this was re-visited after the annual celebration and the decision was made to stay the course. Ultimate accountability is needed in a church the size of Bethel.

Why did it take so long?

We believe every qualified candidate deserves the respect of the full Call process. For a Lead Pastor position in a church this size, one year is very common. The Call Committee was not formed until May 2023, nine months after Pastor John’s retirement. Two pastors have been recommended by the Call Committee in under a year’s time.

Can you share more about the synod?

We had a positive partnership with the NW Synod and appreciated their guidance and support. Bethel’s Call Committee always maintained ultimate authority over the final recommendation.

We still only have two pastors.  What happens next?

The recommendation for Bethel’s next Lead Pastor is complete.  The Call and vote are scheduled. Church leadership believes Bethel is a three-pastor church and will create both near-term and long-term plans which will be communicated as available.
